Lamont Outdoors
I met the head guide of Lamont Outdoors at the Eastern Outdoor & Sports Show in Harrisburg, PA last year. They didn't have a booth, but I just happen to be watching a man give his presentation on how his tree stands work when I said to the guy next to me "Boy that's neat". Once we got to talking I found out they were starting up an outfitting business hunting deer in Southern IL. He handed me a price sheet and I said "don't you hunt turkeys?" noticing that his prices were for only deer hunting. His response was "Nope, they are like varmints down here, we'll let anyone come down and hunt them for free". I'm thinking did I just hear what this guy said? I said, "DEAL".
Two weeks later I'm calling them up to plan my turkey hunt. After a short talk I find out they didn't have a website or any hunters booked yet. Well, I built them a site and started marketing it for them. Helping them get hooked up with another client of mine that deals in deer lure, Lamont Outdoors had over 30 hunters their first year with 100% success during the gun seasons! Not too bad with only 4 months to work with.
The Hunt: It took me 9 hrs to drive to Grayville, IL from PA. My cameraman and I left late Thursday at night arriving 6:30 am Friday morning. After meeting the crew we took a drive around the property seeing all the stand sites for deer season. During that time we saw 19 different gobblers and I was ready to start hunting. I wanted to get my cameraman his first turkey, so by 8:30 am I had called him in a pair of jakes and he killed his first bird hunting not more than 20 minutes! Now on to me.
We spent the rest of the day shooting the bull and getting to know one another. The next morning I set up the double bull blind and was hunting with my Mathews MQ32 hoping to harvest a nice longbeard with my bow and get it all on film. Of course we were filming for another TV show. After 2 hours of hunting and no luck, I decided to get a little aggressive and do a little "Run & Gun". We walked about 1 mile calling every 500 yards before we got a response. This bird was hot and coming fast. After about 7 minutes of calling I closed the deal with the over the shoulder camera shot on a 22 pound, 11" beard, 1" spur Eastern gobbler. My 59th bearded bird in 9 different states! You could say I love to turkey hunt, among other things.
